Frequently asked questions

What is obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)?

Hypertrophic (hai-per-trow-fik) cardiomyopathy (car-dee-ow-mai-op-athy), or HCM, is a condition where the muscle in the walls of the left heart chamber (ventricle) contract harder and become thicker than normal. As the walls thicken, they can block (obstruct) the flow of blood out of the heart. This obstruction makes it more difficult for blood to flow into and out of the heart and be pumped to the body with each heartbeat, a condition known as obstructive HCM. This condition is sometimes referred to as oHCM, HCM with obstruction, or HOCM.

What is CAMZYOS (mavacamten)?

CAMZYOS is an oral treatment (taken by mouth) used to treat adults with a type of heart disease called obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). CAMZYOS is a reversible cardiac myosin inhibitor, meaning that it changes the action of a muscle protein called myosin that is found inside heart muscle cells.

How do I take CAMZYOS?

CAMZYOS is an oral capsule that is taken by mouth once daily. The capsule needs to be swallowed whole (without breaking it) with a glass of water at about the same time each day. You can take this medicine with food or between meals. Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Please check with your doctor if you are not sure.

What happens if I forget to take a dose of CAMZYOS?

If you forget to take CAMZYOS at the usual time, take your dose as soon as you remember on the same day, and take your next dose at the usual time the next day. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten capsule.

What potential side effects does CAMZYOS have?

Like all medicines, CAMZYOS may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people) are dizziness and difficulty breathing. Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people) are fainting and systolic dysfunction (a condition where the heart cannot pump with enough force). Tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you get any of the following symptoms during treatment with CAMZYOS: new or worsening shortness of breath, chest pain, tiredness, palpitations (a forceful heartbeat that may be rapid or irregular), or leg swelling. These could be signs and symptoms of systolic dysfunction, which can lead to heart failure and be life-threatening. These are not all the possible side effects of CAMZYOS. Please talk to your doctor about any symptoms you are experiencing or if you have any concerns.

What are echocardiograms and why do I need them?

Echocardiograms (also known as ‘echos’) are ultrasound tests that allow your doctor to see how well your heart is working and responding to your CAMZYOS treatment. Based on your results, your doctor may adjust your dose of CAMZYOS (increase, lower, or temporarily stop it) to improve your response or to reduce side effects. It is very important to attend your echocardiogram appointments because your doctor needs to check the effect of CAMZYOS on your heart.

Can I take CAMZYOS during pregnancy?

Do not take CAMZYOS during pregnancy, for 6 months before getting pregnant, or if you are a woman who could become pregnant and you are not using effective contraception. CAMZYOS may cause harm to your unborn baby. If you are a woman who could become pregnant, your doctor will inform you about this risk and will check if you are pregnant before starting treatment and regularly during treatment. Your doctor will give you a card which explains why you should not become pregnant while taking CAMZYOS. If you become pregnant, think you may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant while taking CAMZYOS, tell your doctor right away.
